La Seca és el nom que rebia la Reial Fàbrica de la Moneda de la Corona d’Aragó a Barcelona, on es va encunyar moneda des del 1441 fins al 1849.
La finca del carrer de la Seca 2 va formar part de la fàbrica de la moneda. És un edifici d’una sola nau entre mitgeres, de planta quadrada, coberta a dues aigües i estructura de parets de càrrega de maçoneria de pedra del segle XVII, pilars centrals de totxo massís, segurament modificats al segle XIX i altell interior afegit al segle XX.
L’encàrrec era el de resoldre les patologies existents a l’edifici i dotar-lo de les condicions necessàries per a un possible ús cultural.
La incertesa pel futur programa que havia d’acollir l’edifici no ha estat cap handicap per a la proposta de condicionament interior que oferia la resolució de patologies, l’adaptació a la normativa vigent i l’aportació de llum natural amb suficient versatilitat com per adaptar-se a un ús final i concret que es doni a l’edifici, mantenint sempre les estructures i volumetria com a memòria del passat històric significat de la Seca 2.
Tota la informació històrica sobre la fabricació de moneda que es podia obtenir es trobava en el paviment o a cotes inferiors i la intervenció comença, per tant, amb l’excavació arqueològica de tota la superfície interior. Aquesta excavació permet definir el funcionament de la fabricació de la moneda i fer visibles en el paviment final les traces de les bases de la maquinària antiga.
Un únic gest resol la patologia constructiva i estructural existent a la coberta i la falta de llum interior.
Amb un tall de la coberta a l’extrem nord de l’edifici, on el deteriorament de l’estructura requeria una substitució, i la creació d’un pati amb una nova façana vidriada interior, s’aconsegueix eliminar la part de la coberta afectada i resoldre la il·luminació natural de l’interior per reflexió de la llum solar en el mur del pati.
Així mateix, aquest buidat longitudinal permet una relació visual directa amb l’Espai Brossa, part també de l’antiga fàbrica de la Moneda la Seca, marcant un inici de possibles relacions i adicions futures entre els dos edificis.
Aquest nou espai exterior permet també disposar de lloc per a la ubicació de les instal·lacions sense que aquestes afectin la coberta, de la que se’n pretén mantenir al màxim la unitat.
De l’altell existent a l’interior, s’elimina la part més feble estructuralment i es concentren les instal·lacions a la part que es conserva, convertint-la en una gruixuda capa horitzontal funcional. D’aquesta manera s’allibera la resta de l’espai i es pot disposar d’un doble espai d’accés i usos públics múltiples des del que es percep la totalitat de l’interior i la coberta original.
La nova mitgera a doble alçada, així com la planta altell, s’equipen amb prestatgeries per donar servei al possible ús cultural i documental del futur de l’edifici. La resta de l’espai es deixa lliure i versàtil a servitud de la futura activitat.
La Seca is the name given to the Royal Coin Factory of the Crown of Aragon in Barcelona, where coinage was minted from 1441 to 1849.
The estate on Carrer de la Seca 2 was part of the coin factory. It is a building with a single nave between partitions, square in plan, gabled roof and structure of load-bearing walls of stone masonry of the seventeenth century, central pillars of solid brick, probably modified in the nineteenth century and interior mezzanine added in the century XX.
The task was to resolve the existing pathologies in the building and provide it with the necessary conditions for a possible cultural use.
The uncertainty for the future program to be hosted by the building has not been a handicap for the proposed interior conditioning that offered the resolution of pathologies, adaptation to current regulations and the provision of natural light with sufficient versatility as to adapt to a final and concrete use that is given to the building, always maintaining the structures and volumetry as a memory of the historical past meaning of the Seca 2.
All the historical information about the coinage that could be obtained was on the pavement or at lower elevations and the intervention therefore begins with the archaeological excavation of the entire interior surface. This excavation allows to define the operation of the manufacture of the coin and to make visible in the final pavement the traces of the bases of the old machinery.
A single gesture solves the constructive and structural pathology existing on the roof and the lack of interior light.
With a cut of the roof at the north end of the building, where the deterioration of the structure required a replacement, and the creation of a courtyard with a new glazed interior facade, it is possible to remove the part of the roof affected and resolve the natural lighting of the interior by reflection of sunlight on the courtyard wall.
Also, this longitudinal emptying allows a direct visual relationship with the Espai Brossa, also part of the old La Moneda la Seca factory, marking the beginning of possible relationships and future additions between the two buildings.
This new outdoor space also provides space for the location of the facilities without affecting the roof, which is intended to maintain the maximum unit.
From the existing loft inside, the weakest part is removed structurally and the facilities are concentrated in the part that is preserved, turning it into a thick functional horizontal layer. In this way the rest of the space is freed up and a double space of access and multiple public uses can be had from which the totality of the interior and the original cover is perceived.
The new double-height partition, as well as the mezzanine floor, are equipped with shelves to serve the possible cultural and documentary use of the future of the building. The rest of the space is left free and versatile for future activities.
